The mitochondria is an organelle belong to eukaryotic cell, its owning genome and protein are distinct from chromosome. In generally, the form of genomic DNA in mitochondria is circular form; except ciliates and green alga, they contain linear form mitochondrial DNA. The amount of mitogenome is quite large, because a cell comprise abundant mitochondria and multiple copy number of genome of mitochondria. In comparison, the size of mitogenome is fluctuated. For instance, the smallest one is mammalian, Drosophila’s and Anura’s are following to the next and then yeast’s mitochondria is relatively large then former. The largest mitochondria usually found in plant. The average size of mitochondria is about 16.5 kb (between 15 and 20 kb) in human, mice and cow. By contrast, the size of mitogenome in plant cell has great difference in size, the minimum size of which is about 100kb, mostly are non-coding DNA sequence, and has many short homologous sequences. The recombination of homologous sequences will create smaller sub genomic circular DNA.Mitogenome is considered to be a semiautonomous organelle due to it can process replication, transcription and protein synthesis independently. However, mitogenome and nuclear genome has strong interaction between each other, forming structure of mitochondria and processing its vital activity sometimes regulated by some nuclear genes. These two hereditary genome system, one is in nucleus and the other in cytoplasm exactly, co-exist in a eukaryotic cell processing there vital activity independently caused hereditary interaction. In molecular research field, mitogenome is a good model for study DNA structure, replication process and transcription process.
